drawn for a gocko print competition

Process of Neo traditional style tattoo design. Happy with the bottom koi and the overall flow but look how I add too much colour and obliterate the whole thing… this I will have to have another bash at this one.

I have always wanted to be a tattooist. I even wrote my A Level project on tattoos, I have been drawing daggers and snakes on my hands in biro since I can’t remember when. So I signed up to Mike Stockings’s Patreon and got cracking!
On the iPad in Procreate.

I am a big fan of a pun and this arose out of one of them.

Here’s the final scan of a portrait of the fantastic Aflo the Poet. The photo was from the fab Draw Brighton. I drew this in ink and pro markers with a hint of white ink on heavyweight water colour paper. I really enjoyed this and it’s sort of a preliminary for a larger watercolour piece.
There is so much I got wrong here. I am not sure why I cannot take the time and get the under drawing and proportions right. You’d think I would learn patience by now!
For this I sketched it in non-photo blue pencil and then inked in my sketchbook. Then I scanned it and transferred it on to watercolour paper with a light pad. Something changed with the proportions when I scanned it and it got a bit larger for some reason.

Here is a design I made in procreate. I was thinking of having it as a back of hand tattoo. It’s a dragon, can you tell? My son thought it was a tiger or something…

I have spent ages on this tut and I finally finished it so I wanted to post IMMEDIATELY! I am really happy with the result of this tutorial I did from Gabrielle Brickey (@artworkbygabrielle on insta) it was a fantastic tutorial and I learnt so much about portraits, digital painting and procreate. Thank you Gabrielle! I think there is still a few things I could do better but it has given me the skills I needed to take forward two other portraits I have on the go. I can thoroughly recommend the tut (she has 40% on her store rn btw)

This is another thing that evolved out of figure drawing practice thanks to draw Brighton reference photos.
Another figure drawing practice piece. This time after the intial pencil sketch of the model, I decided to fill in the colours with promarkers. There are some real success’ here for me. The legs and feet I am particularly fond of. The background however somewhat losts it’s way. Like a poem that starts with a great first line and then struggles to maintain that impetus, that is what I found here, the figure was goodish and served the purpose of life drawing practice and I like the idea of the flowers. The background however is way too busy and the mountains less than successful. Thanks again to Draw Brighton for the reference.
Drawn using promarkers and finelines on watercolour paper.

This one is mostly a result if me wanting to create something like Mike Stockings’s great tattoo artwork. He uses procreate on the iPad and I wanted to see if I could create something similar with Photoshop and a Wacom intuos. Here is the result. I had “The wolf is loose” by Mastodon going round in my head as I drew so this influenced the result as you can see!

This was a task that I did for the Creativity and Navigating Uncertainty course. Although the images are not the strongest, I enjoyed following a broad creative brief and executing in keeping with the three stages of the process;
This is not portfolio work by any means, but interesting to see how a piece of work can come together with just a small impetus and a few parameters.
