My kind have been here sometime
since before you created these tall tall places to stand
And dug new veins into earth
Before the world got loud with your ruckus
We stand on these new tall places
Taller than any trees we had seen before
And watch you
These new places are unmoving
They don t talk to us like the trees do
They don t shiver at our touch
There is only cold hardness when our claws touch
The scraps you throw us are welcome change
from the carrion we usually feed on
We appreciate the closeness and attention you show us
But you look askance or laugh when we try to talk to you
I hop close to look at you
one eye at a time
We have much to tell you
Words
Tellings from the time before
And the time after
We have words for you
If only you would remember
how to listen.
